The First Fanfiction Contest!! [02 Jul 2005|04:02pm]

[ mood | accomplished ]

Okay! I have finally gotten around to getting everything ready for our first fanfiction contest.

The manga/anime that it will be based on Gravitation. If anyone has any problems with that, please contact me. ^_^

The length that it has to be between in 2-7 pages on word. If you have problems with staying between the limit then tell me and I will see if I can change the limit.

There has to be some kind of coupling in the fanfic, and there has to be at least one kiss. I think that will not be too hard to do. It has to have the theme of 4th of July.

Due Date: July 31. If there needs to be an extension, I will make one. I think this will be a good deadline though.

Winner will get... either an avatar with whatever picture and words they want on it, a fanart with any amount of people in it, or fanfiction with anything they want in it. I will be making the reward.

So, I think that is it for that. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns please ask.

Also, for turning the fanfiction in, please just comment on this post and put your fanfic submission there.

Fanfiction [12 Mar 2005|04:12pm]

[ mood | curious ]

Well I was just thinking about how there isn't much going around here and I was thinking that maybe we could do a fanfiction contest. That way everyone could get to show off their skills and get some critiques. What does everyone else think?

Japanese Info #8 [18 Feb 2005|04:56pm]

Number 8 is here!! I hope you enjoy the information on Samurai. ^_^

Heian Period (794-1185)

The samurai's importance and influence grew during the Heian Period, when powerful landowners hired private warriors for the protection of their properties. Towards the end of the Heian Period, two military clans, the Minamoto and Taira, had grown so powerful that they seized control over the country and fought wars for supremacy against each other.

Kamakura Period (1192-1333)

In 1185, the Minamoto defeated the Taira, and Minamoto Yoritomo established a new military government in Kamakura in 1192. As shogun, the highest military officer, he became the ruler of Japan.

Muromachi Period (1333 - 1573)

During the chaotic Era of Warring States (sengoku jidai, 1467-1573), Japan consisted of dozens of independent states which were constantly fighting each other. Consequently, the demand for samurai was very high. Between the wars, many samurai were working on farms. Many of the famous samurai movies by Kurosawa take place during this era.

Azuchi-Momoyama Period (1573 - 1603)

When Toyotomi Hideyoshi reunited Japan, he started to introduce a rigid social caste system which was later completed by Tokugawa Ieyasu and his successors. Hideyoshi forced all samurai to decide between a life on the farm and a warrior life in castle towns. Furthermore, he forbade anyone but the samurai to arm themselves with a sword.

Edo Period (1603 - 1868)

According to the Edo Period's official hierarchy of social castes, the samurai stood at the top, followed by the farmers, artisans and merchants. Furthermore, there were hierarchies within each caste. All samurai were forced to live in castle towns and received income from their lords in form of rice. Masterless samurai were called ronin and caused minor troubles during the early Edo Period.

With the fall of Osaka Castle in 1615, the Tokugawa's last potential rival was eliminated, and relative peace prevailed in Japan for about 250 years. As a result, the importance of martial skills declined, and most samurai became bureaucrats, teachers or artists.

In 1868, Japan's feudal era came to an end, and the samurai class was abolished.

Japanese Info #7 [12 Feb 2005|09:19am]

[ mood | awake ]

Well here is number 7.

Former Samurai District
A beautifully preserved samurai district with several former samurai mansions open to the public. Kakunodate's samurai district is famous for its many weeping cherry trees.

The samurai (or bushi) were the members of the military class, the Japanese warriors.
Samurai employed a range of weapons such as bows and arrows, spears and guns; but their most famous weapon and their symbol was the sword.

Samurai were supposed to lead their lives according to the ethic code of bushido ("the way of the warrior"). Strongly Confucian in nature, Bushido stressed concepts such as loyalty to one's master, self discipline and respectful, ethical behavior.

After a defeat, some samurai chose to commit ritual suicide (seppuku) by cutting their abdomen rather than being captured or dying a dishonorable death.

Cherry Blossom

The cherry blossom (sakura) is Japan's unofficial national flower. It has been celebrated for many centuries and takes a very prominent position in Japanese culture.

There are many dozens of different cherry tree varieties in Japan, most of which bloom for just a couple of days in spring. The Japanese celebrate that time of the year with hanami (cherry blossom viewing) parties under the blooming trees

Japanese Word #7:
oshiete kudasai- please tell me, please teach me

For the next one, I plan to explain more on Saumurai, so I hope you enjoyed this one. ^_^

Japanese Info #6 [08 Feb 2005|04:49pm]

I have been a little behind on this Japanese info stuff. Sorry about that, I have just been a little too busy to be able to do too much. Well here it is.

Koishikawa Korakuen
Koishikawa Korakuen is a beautiful Japanese landscape garden, representing famous Japanese and Chinese sceneries in miniature. It dates from the early Edo Period and is enjoyable during all four seasons of the year. Koishikawa Korakuen is not part of Tokyo Dome City, but located only a short walk from it.
Open daily from 9:00 to 17:00, except from December 29 to January 3. Admission: 300 Yen.

Tokyo Dome
Tokyo Dome, seating 55,000, is the home stadium of the Yomiuri Giants and Nippon Ham, two professional baseball teams. Concerts, festivals and other events are held in the stadium when there are no games. Tokyo Dome, nicknamed "Big Egg", was completed in 1988 and replaced the former Korakuen Stadium.
Hours and entrance fees depend on the specific events.

Japanese Word #6
ame: rain

I hope you all liked that. I will hopefully put up another one tonight or later today when I have the time. Unluckily I have to help my mom tutor in a few minutes. I would have gone on aim... but with only a few minutes it isn't worth the time. -_-'
